SurajkundMela: A learning Ground for DME Media School students
It was a field day for the students of journalism and mass communication of DME at the eventful 34thSurajkund Craft Fair on February 12, 2020. Students of all three years of BA-JMC learned and honed their skills in outdoor photography, AV production, podcasting and V-logging on a large canvas with an international exposure.
An educational trip to Surajkund Craft Fair is an annual extravaganza of DME Media School. As part of this exercise, the trainers – the faculty members of DME Media School –work with students in nurturing their creative instinct.
To capture the merriments of SurajkundMela amid thousands of enthusiastic visitors was initially a challenging task for the students but under the supervision of DrSusmitaBala, Head, DME Media School and other faculty members, they managed to accomplish all the tasks assigned to them.
“It was a great educational experience for me as I learned so many things on a single day. I liked the concept of choosing one state from the country as a central theme and promoting the rich inheritance of it with other states”, said by AkshayArora, a first-year student.
”I enjoyed capturing the Mela. I belong to Uttarakhand and it was good to see stalls of my state in the fair. Cultural performances of the artists were incredible” said Harsh Kandpal, a first-year student.
Surajkund craft fest gave students a perfect platform to practice different aspects of photography and videography. Stalls of countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Syria and Nigeria gave them ample opportunity to learn about the handicraft of these nations.

Delhi Metropolitan Education organized Industrial visit for the students at Amar Ujala ,C- 21-22 Sector 59 Noida on 2nd September ,2019. The visit was arranged according to their BA (JMC) curriculum. Mr. Sonu Bhaskar, Manager Production addressed students about the process of selection of news to the printing process of the newspaper. Mr. Arjun Nirala, Sr. Coordinator, Ujala Foundation also showcased the assistance programme for the weaker section of society. He emphasized the need of society to provide help the society to support development of every individual.
Films are strong source of disseminating a message to the society and if used well, can act as a strong weapon for social reformation. With the youth getting more aware and active facilitated by the technology, training them on the issues of national and social importance in film-making is a step towards a better future.
With this objective in mind, a national workshop titled ‘JASHN-E-AMAN’ was organized on film-making at DME from September 8th to 10th. It was organized at the initiative of Dr. Ramani Swarna.
Thirty students, including 10 from other colleges, participated in the workshop organised in collaboration with STEP Trust, UNESCO, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) and Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT).
Ice-breaking sessions and introduction to the concept of Interfaith and religious understanding amongst the youth constituted the 1st day of the workshop. On the 2nd day, the students watched short films and documentaries, the focus being on one of the classics titled ‘The Birth of Nations’. Post the screening, a technical session on film-making was conducted. On the 3rd day, three documentaries were screened and students discussed elaborately about the plots, titles, concepts and philosophies of the films they were planning to make.
The Guest-of-Honor on the concluding day of the workshop was Dr. Ambrish Saxena, Advisor to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. He underlined the importance of the medium of films in social change while emphasizing on the making of documentaries after proper research. He felicitated the students and faculty members with the certificates. Dr. Susmita Bala, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at DME, also graced the function.
The documentaries produced during the workshop were screened at the India Habitat Center on September 21as part of World Peace Day programme.
The journalism and mass communication students always strive to make presentations while doing their assignments in some paper or the other. This task was made easy to them by Dr. Ramani Swarna, faculty in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication during a workshop held in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium of Delhi Metropolitan Education (DME) on 24th August.
Holding workshop on the theme ‘How to give an effective presentation’, Dr. Swarna emphasized that effective presentation involves in-depth understanding of the audience and the topic. She discussed several aspects that need to be taken care of while giving a presentation. She asserted the importance of clothes, hair and gestures in order to appear confident. She said, “What you wear while delivering a presentation is a critical element of the overall success of your presentation”.
Having learned about the impact of using a Powerpoint presentation, the students B. A. (JMC) appeared contented. The workshop turned out to be an effective learning process for them.

DME Radio – the Radio society of DME organized a visit of the students to All India Radio (AIR) on 14th September, 2017. As many as 14 students were part of this visit held under the guidance of Mr. Rahul Joshi. The students went around the studios, got acquainted with the equipment and software used, interacted with the programme producers and watched the live broadcast in AIR. The students were really excited in learning new things from the renowned personalities in the field of broadcasting.
The students also witnessed an interview of ‘Ms. Vasu Primlani’, a talented and dynamic personality who is a stand-up comedian, an actor, and an environmentalist. The interview was conducted by ‘Ms. Monika Gulati’, Programme Executive for talk shows in AIR.
The students were taken around the ‘FM GOLD’ (106.4 MHz) channel at AIR to observe and learn the radio production techniques like microphones, consoles, microphones and sound editing software etc. This visit provided a clear understanding of the transmission process to the students. The valuable input provided to the students helped them in polishing their skills for a career in radio production.

(JMC) attended workshop on documentary filmmaking at India International Centre on 13th and 14th September, as part of Open Frame Film Festival. This festival is being organised by Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) every year.
The first interactive titled ‘Diving into Documentaries’ was conducted by Ms. Anupama Srinivasan, a renowned freelance filmmaker, trainer and curator. She guided the students about how they could move beyond rigid categorizations and delve into the excellent world of audio-visual expressions with an open mind.
The second session titled ‘Cinema in the Time of Mobile Phone Cameras: Master Class’ was conducted by Mr. Ranjan Palit, a well-known cinematographer, director and producer who also introduced the students to the world of documentary making.
DME students participated in the workshops under the supervision of Dr. Ramani Swarna. The workshops gave a great exposure and a lifetime learning experience to the students.
World of newspaper production explored during printing press visit.
Print journalism plays a vital role in the field of media. Majority of the population depends on newspapers to remain updated with day-to-day activities and issues. In fact, courts of law consider newspapers as full proof evidence rather than relying on news presented on the television. News published in newspapers is considered more authentic and reliable.
So, it was thought imperative to get the students exposed to the production process of newspaper. With this purpose, B.A. (JMC) first year students of Delhi Metropolitan Education were taken to the visit of printing press of Dainik Jagran on October 4 under the supervision of Dr. Ramani Swarna.
Mr. Anand, Deputy Editor at the Dainik Jagran press, gave an introduction about the formation and achievements of this newspaper to the students. He highlighted the fact that the name Dainik Jagran was derived from the weekly newspaper named ‘Jagran’. According to Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) and Indian Readership Survey (IRS) Dainik Jagran is in the topmost position when it comes to readership. Dainik Jagran reaches to 100 million Indians and when it comes to e-newspaper, per day hit is about 10 millions.
The photography society of DME organized a photo walk on 4th October, 2017 to the National Zoological Park, New Delhi. The students were mentored by Mr. Harjeet Singh Kukreja. Each student was given the task of spending the day near one animal each, shoot and observe their movements and habitat. The purpose of this activity was to enhance the skills required to become wildlife photographers.
As students were allotted with a particular animal, they had to capture their activities in different angles, frames, poses, lighting and other specifications. The mentor guided the students to capture a particular movement with different effects.
During the lunch, the students shared their experiences and observations. They were also taught on how they can better explore the world of wildlife photography. Overall it was a golden opportunity for the members of DME Frames.
The B. A. (JMC) students participated in the Film Festival organized by Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication, Dwarka on 10th October, 2017. The Film Festival named ‘We Care’ was about sensitizing students about the differently-abled and how some of them became well-known personalities in the field of art, sports, etc. with their unbreakable will to succeed through documentaries, guests and films.
Students of BJMC first year got a chance to visit the studio of India Tv for the programme ‘Aap ki Adalat’ hosted by a senior journalist, Mr. Rajat Sharma. The guest of the show was renowned Bollywood actor ‘Kajol’. Students got the opportunity to see how interview-based programmes are conducted in real.
On 21st August 2018, the students of 2nd year DME Media School got a tremendous experience to discover an array offerocious animals, birds, mammals etc. at the National Zoological Park Delhi. The teacher incharge for the visit were Mr. Harjeet Singh Kukreja and Mr. Rahul Joshi. The visit to the zoo was based on group assignments that the students were told to do.
All the students were guided regarding the different camera holding techniques, the types of shots along with other essential techniques.
The zoo is home to about 1350 animals representing almost 130 species of animals and birds from around the world.
The zoo is part of conservation breeding programmes of the Central Zoo Authority for the royal Bengal tiger, Indian rhinoceros, swamp deer, Asiatic lion, brow antlered deer, and red jungle fowl.It can be seen on foot or using a battery-operated vehicle which can be rented at the zoo. For the shoot the students preferred walking on foot and observing the animals. Few students of each group gave specific time to individual animals of about 10 to 15 minutes.
The students got awestruck with the view of Manipur Brow-antlered Deers, Blackbuck, Leopards, Hippopotamus and many such more gigantic yet beautiful animals.
The biggest task for the students was to cover the actions and reactions of the animals. They had to wait for animals to make some movements and give reactions for a perfect shot.
All in all, It was a memorable trip for all the students of 2nd year as it ended with great zeal and enthusiasm.
