Issues of Community, Agenda and News

ICAN: Concept Note

21st century is the century of rapid technological advancement, still geopolitical and cross-cultural issues have perplexed the world order. In the era of cosmopolitanism and multi culturalism, communities and their issues have been thrown to the backyard. Countries with military might and deep pockets set the agenda and communities both local and global are devoid of a space in the so-called agenda of development. New media and news media tools are being used by states as well as non-state actors with ulterior motives and the level-playing benefits of the communication technology appear significantly diminished. This situation has bestowed responsibility on academicians and researchers to study and analyse the pertinent issues and come out with scientific and rational findings.

Community Issues and Development: The conference will deliberate, discuss and analyze the issues plaguing communities local, cross-national and multi-national and global. The communities need to be approached from social, religious, cultural and ethnic perspective with an academic orientation towards indigenous values and universally prevalent thought. The researchers are expected to be interested in investigating the role of mass communication and mass media in the community settings and evaluating their impact on resolving (or compounding) the issues confronted by a community. Development covering every spectrum of life remains a relevant issue for mass communication scholars.

Geo-political issues and Communities: Within the country communities, be it tribal or dalit, are at the receiving end while minority communities are facing seclusion. In the conflict zones of the globe, people are facing persecution leading to migration. This has cut the roots of many communities while few are facing annihilation. What role mass media is performing or is expected to perform in such a situation? Scholars and researchers can touch upon wide-ranging issues for their study, right from regionalism/regional conflicts and nationalism/ideology of nation to wars, cross border terrorism, boundary disputes and migration.

Media, News and Agenda setting: Media is a catalyst and stakeholder in development both at the local and global level. Media does and is also expected to set the agenda for development, peace and harmony. But, the indulgence of conventional news media in desires of the state and encroachment on new media platforms has created a situation adversely affecting the communities. The role of media in creating selective perceptions and selective public opinion is something which needs to be studied by mass communication scholars.

Objectives of the Conference:

  1. To inform, educate and sensitize the people on various issues of community, development and theoretical underpinnings.
  2. To understand the role of news in opinion making and social change, and the power and responsibility of mass media.
  3. To analyse the agenda setting role of news media, and to discuss the influence of media content on iGeneration.
  4. To study the role of streaming media and online content, and the functions of various digital media platforms.
  5. Finally, the conference will aim at creating a platform for exploring innovative solutions to various issues by providing recommendations for policy makers.
