F. Drucker: Series of Special Lecture on Management
In today’s dynamic world things change very rapidly and radically that ignorance to these dynamics may lead to failures and lack of required accomplishments. Consequently, it is extremely important to regularly learn emerging trends and get acquainted with past experiences. Accordingly, we at DME believe that no curriculum is complete without incorporating knowledge about such trends in industry and experience beyond books. To make this happen department of management organizes Peter F Drucker management series of lectures featuring eminent scholars and personalities from Academic and corporate world. These speakers enlighten the students and faculty members with their vast experiences. This is an initiative to broaden the thinking horizons and adding facets to perspectives of our students and faculty. Peter F Drucker management lecture series is an endeavor to enhance knowledge and exposure through sequences of lectures conducted by experts and intellectuals from fields of management or allied fields.
About P.F. Drucker
Peter Ferdinand Drucker (November 19, 1909 – November 11, 2005) was an Austrian-born American management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation. He was also a leader in the development of management education, he invented the concept known as management by objectives and self-control and he has been described as “the founder of modern management”. Drucker’s books and scholarly and popular articles explored how humans are organized across the business, government, and nonprofit sectors of society. He is one of the best-known and most widely influential thinkers and writers on the subject of management theory and practice. His writings have predicted many of the major developments of the late twentieth century, including privatization and decentralization; the rise of Japan to economic world power; the decisive importance of marketing; and the emergence of the information society with its necessity of lifelong learning. In 1959, Drucker coined the term “knowledge worker,” and later in his life considered knowledge-worker productivity to be the next frontier of management.
Year 2018
Under the Peter F. Drucker lecture series, our management department invited Mr. Venkat Sundaram to deliver a lecture on “Leadership & Sports.”
Mr. Venkat Sundaram is a respected former cricket player, coach, manager, mentor, commentator and pitch curator who has played for Delhi Ranji team alongside cricketing greats like Bishen Singh Bedi, Madan Lal, Mohinder Amarnath among many others.
A left-handed, dashing opening batsman, Venkat was the part of Delhi’s Ranji trophy winning team for two consecutive years in the 70s and 80s. He hit stardom when he scored an unbeaten 177, playing for Rest of India team against the Ranji champions, Bombay in the 1977-78 domestic cricket season.
Venkat Sundaram pursued graduation and post-graduation degrees in Economics from the famed Hindu college of Delhi university and was one of the few cricketers who contributed to the game of cricket immensely even after their playing days were over. He was the Manager of Team India and managed Indian team that included the then young genius whom the world knows as Sachin Tendulkar.
Mr Venkat Sundaram was also a radio and TV commentator and his English commentary style was laced with language that was understood by all. He still appears on several shows on radio and TV that involve the game of cricket. He also excelled in the field of pitch management and rose to the position of Chairman of Pitches committee of BCCI, India.
During his one hour interactive lecture, Mr Sundaram spoke about the leadership styles of various Captains of Indian cricket team. He explained to the students the strategic plan that goes into the building of a great team. He also emphasized the importance of tactics that come into play from session to session in a game of cricket. He spoke in great detail about his experiences with some of the great Indian including Virender Sehwag whom he singled out for courage and strong mental attitude. He also explained the preparation that went into making Kapil Dev one of the Best all-rounders of the game of cricket of all times. Mr Sundaram stressed upon the fact that it is the duty of the leaders to mentor their players and recounted how he prevailed upon Sanjay Bangar, the present Batting coach of Indian cricket team, not to leave Railways team to play for Mumbai Ranji team. Sanjay Bangar paid attention to his coach’s advise and stayed on to play for Railways team where his performance was noticed and he went on to play for India. Mr Sundaram revealed that had Bangar joined Mumbai, he wouldn’t have been given many playing opportunities by the star-studded Mumbai Ranji team.
The audience, comprising the students and teachers of DME, were given many tips by Mr Sundaram on how to remain healthy, fit and sprightly. He said that health and character were the most precious assets of every human being. He urged the students to say NO to tobacco, drugs and alcohol, the first time and every time.
The students and teachers expressed their appreciation by giving Mr Sundaram thunderous applause at the end of the lecture.
Vineet Sagar is a senior executive with Exxon Mobil Corporation. He has worked in Lubricants division, Gas division among others in Exxon Mobil Corporation.
Exxon Mobil Corporation has consistently ranked among the Top 10 companies in the Fortune Global List. Its revenues in 2017 were approximately 237 BILLION U.S. dollars.
Vineet worked for Indian Oil Corporation for 14 years before joining Exxon in India as the Lubes Manager. He set up the Lubes business from scratch in Northern India and was one of the most successful managers of Exxon in India.
He moved to the challenging assignment of LNG gas in India and he has worked in Exxon Mobil Nigeria, Australia and India. A widely travelled man, vineet now works as Commercial Advisor in Exxon Mobil and is an authority on the very specialized domain of the commercial structures of Gas business over various geographies.
In the Lecture, Vineet elaborated upon the spectrum of work cultures and ethics around the world. He pointed out that every culture has its own pros and cons and no culture qualifies as the best. The ideal practice is to emulate the best practices from different parts of the world. As an example, calling colleagues by first name is the norm in the global arena. This practice is a step towards equality and helps in curbing sycophancy that happens at the managerial level. Managers in India must propagate this culture. Similarly, they should also propagate an open culture where every team member can give opinions, influencing work related decisions. This gives power to employees and gives birth to innovations in organizations.
He emphasized that it is the culture of an organization that builds its credibility in the market. If the honesty and ethics dwindle, organizations suffer along with employees who suffer at a personal level. A case when forgery of a signature for consignment of goods led to three employees losing their jobs along with a setback to the company’s reputation was discussed at length. He also explained the case of Mr Rajat Gupta, former CEO of Mckinsey, to make students understand the importance of ethics. He showed a visual presentation to the students where he explained the importance of perception.
Towards the end of the session, he motivated the students to enhance their skills as it is a key for career advancement. He also highlighted the four areas of motivation in life namely, psychological, financial, opportunity and responsibility and encouraged students to work towards it.
Vineet Sagar was felicitated by Dr Swati Jain, Associate Professor at the DME Management School and the guest of honor Dr. Sudhir Bisht was felicitated by Prof. Pooja Tripathi. Prof. Rachna Sharma presented the vote of thanks. Students from BBA batch 2018-21 Divya Sharma and Aditi Sinha conducted the program.
